Astronomy Day at Spring Wings
Each year we hold several events that are geared toward educating the general public. One of our main events is our annual Public Telescope Viewing Night at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. This year we will be making a whole day of it in conjunction with the Sanctuary's Spring Wings Weekend. The date is Saturday, May 10th and we have several activites planned.
10:00 am to 4:00 pm Daytime viewing of the Sun
Despite what you may have heard or been taught, there are safe ways to view
the Sun, our nearest star. Please join us outside at the Sanctuary's Nature
Center weather permitting where we will show you how you can safely view
the Sun.
8:30pm to 10:30pm Telescope Viewing
This event will be held at the Sanctuary's grounds located to the east of
Danz Avenue. Many club members will have their telescopes set up to look
at the wonders of the night sky. Please join us for the opportunity see
the the Moon, Saturn, Mars, star clusters, galaxies and nebula. Looking
through telescopes is weather dependent so this activity will take place
only if it is clear. Please watch for the signs directing you to the observing
grounds from the main entrance.
9:00 pm Evening Presentation
In the event of cloudy weather, we will have a presentation on the night
sky at the Nature Center.
Other Activities
Scale Solar System walk: Pick up a map near the "Sun" and take
a nice leasurely stroll around the Sanctuary trails. As you walk pay attention
for the signs designating the positions and sizes of the planets. This should
be a fun and educational activity for the entire family.
The Neville Public Museum Astronomical Society is a member of NASA's Night Sky Network, a nationwide coalition of amateur astronomy clubs bringing the science, technology, and inspiration of NASA's missions to the general public. We are also part of JPL's Saturn Observation Campaign who's objective is to create opportunities for professional and amateur astronomers to engage the public in the excitement of astronomy, using telescopes and the Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn. We will be incorporating several elements of each of these organizations into our activities and observing sessions.
Please join us for a fun filled day and night of activities designed to be both fun and educational. We have lots of fun planned and we hope to see you all there!
